Woman killed on Ky 229

A London woman died in a single-vehicle crash Monday evening about six miles south of London on KY 229.

April Hall, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene about 5 p.m. by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling. The cause of death was a broken neck.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rodney Vanzant said Hall was traveling south in a red Chrysler mini-van when she left the right side of the road, hit a culvert, went airborne and landed upside down.

Hall’s mini-van landed in Lorene Hammons’ yard at 4227 Barbourville Road. Hammons was sitting on her front porch watching her grandson play ball in her yard at the time of the accident.

“I had just got him away from the edge of the road when I saw a car come flipping across my yard,” Hammons said. “It flipped two or three times before it stopped. I don’t know for sure how many times. She took a mailbox with her as she came through.”

Hammons said she was shocked by the accident.

“My grandbabies play ball in the yard all the time,” she said.

Hammons’ son, Tim Hammons, called 911.

The accident happened about a quarter of a mile past the junction of KY 229 and KY 1189, Vanzant said.

Traffic was detoured down KY 1189 by Sheriff Fred Yaden and other members of the department.

Assisting Vanzant at the scene were Deputy Jason Back, London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.
