Two wrecks near same spot on KY 80

Slick, wet roads caused a number of accidents in Laurel County Nov. 10, with east KY 80 a particularly problematic area. Two accidents occurred within a matter of hours on the roadway.

The first wreck took place near Sasser Road around 1:30 p.m. when two teenage girls, driving a Ford Focus, “crossed the center line and struck another vehicle in the driver’s front wheel,” Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Back said.

Both vehicles landed in the ditch.

Ruth Kurtz, 53, of Manchester, was trapped in her car and needed to be extricated by the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad. Kurtz’ passenger, Billy Hayre, 26, was also injured.

All four involved in the accident were taken to Manchester Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The victims’ conditions were not available Thursday morning.

Back reported all those involved in the wreck were wearing seat belts and neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected.

Back was assisted at the scene by Sheriff’s Deputy Ernest Rudder, the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad and Bush Fire Department.

The second accident also took place near the Clay County line, with troopers from the Kentucky State Police working that wreck.
