LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A Keavy man was listed in critical condition on Friday following a shooting incident early that morning.

Everett Morgan, 61, of Earl Howard Road in the Keavy area of Laurel County, suffered several gunshot wounds, inflicted by a neighbor, just after 1 a.m. Friday.

Information from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office indicates Morgan was at his residence when he was shot and called a neighbor to call 9-1-1. When  Deputy Kirk Mays arrived at Morgan’s residence, he found him fully conscious sitting on the living room couch.

The shooter, 64-year-old Michael Wayne Whitehead, also of Earl Howard Road, 12 miles south of London, was reportedly semi-conscious and highly intoxicated. He was lying on the floor at Morgan’s residence and a handgun was located nearby. No motive for the shooting was released by sheriff’s officials.

Morgan identified Whitehead as the shooter and he was placed under arrest and charged with first-degree assault. Whitehead was arraigned in Laurel District Court Friday morning and scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, Aug. 14. He was placed under a $50,000 cash bond.

Morgan was treated by EMS members of Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, then flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of his injuries.

Detective Charlie Loomis is leading the investigation. Assisting Deputy Mays at the scene were Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore and Sgt. Chuck Johnson.
