Rain brings out umbrellas, but can't dampen spirits on Fourth
About two hours into the Red, White & Boom festivities Saturday at College Park, rain started falling and visitors scrambled under the shelters or took out their umbrellas to wait it out.
William and Lola Crank of Jackson County were huddled under a big red umbrella and eating popcorn.
“It’s our first time here,” William Crank said. “We like it. We’re going to stay for all of it.”
It rained about three times during the Red, White & Boom.
“One time it was pretty heavy,” Coordinator Sharon Benge said. “People sat right there with their umbrellas. There were a few people who left, but for the ones that left, there were more that came. Everything went off pretty much on schedule. I don’t think our attendance was off at all. Actually, somebody said we might have set a record.I was very pleased. It went very well considering the threat of rain all day.”
Before it started raining, the children participated in limbo and hula hoop contests and played on inflatables. They were given free balloons on strings and free balloons made into animals of their choice.
The Kentucky National Guard had a Black Hawk helicopter on site for all the visitors to look at or climb inside for a better look.
Entertainment by the Christian rock group Delorian Gray was able to play in the rain because they were under a shelter. Following this group, Body and Soul played ’50s and ’60s music.
At 7:30 p.m., a salute to the military began with a fly over by the Black Hawk before it left for Frankfort. The Laurel County Fire Alliance Honor Guard presented the colors at 8 p.m., and the Disabled American Veterans Color Guard fired a 21-gun salute and played “Taps.”
The fireworks began at 10 p.m. and ended just before another downpour.
