LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
London Downtown’s Chicken Invasion is now open to not only businesses but all public and independent schools in Laurel County. In cooperation with the World Chicken Festival, London-Laurel Tourist Commission, City of London, and Money’s Folk Art, the Chicken Invasion will soon come to town once again September 27-30.
There are five different carved chicken patterns to chose from. A wooden chicken is offered for embellishment at $100 for a business, $50 for a non-profit and $25 for a classroom.
Schools, classrooms and businesses are all eligible to win the Best of Show award. All entries will be judged by the same juried artists that are judging the outdoor sculpture competition, which offers a $2,500 Best in Show cash prize. The artistic panel includes Rhonda Wilford, an artist in residence from the Carnegie Community Arts Center, and Ed Lawrence of the Kentucky Arts Council.
Chicken Invasion winners receive “clucking,” or bragging, rights and a fun traveling trophy/plaque.
With a $1 donation, individuals can cast their vote for the "Crowd Favorite" chicken during the festival. The votes will be counted on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. and a winner will be announced at 5 p.m. in the Chicken Invasion area.
The invasion location will be in front of the Sander’s Court Stage beside the World’s Biggest Skillet. This area will receive optimum viewing from festival visitors.
All chickens will be available for pick-up at the Chicken Barn on Dixie Street by Sept. 5, and chickens must be completed and delivered to the London Community Center by Monday, Sept. 23.
