NLHS students want to see history

Raising money for class trip to Presidential Inauguration

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Students at North Laurel High School have their sights set on watching history in the making on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. on January 20, 2013.  Since the inauguration takes place every four years, the AP U.S. History senior class of 2013 is going to carpe diem, or “seize the day,” through a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Instructor Howard Muncy and his students will be hosting the fish fry fundraiser in the school cafeteria.  The meal will be followed by a cake auction at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $8 per person in advance and $10 per person at the door.

Students will not only witness the presidential inauguration, if enough money is raised, but they will also have a chance to explore the nation’s capital and visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

“A lot of my family has served in previous wars, like Vietnam and World War II.  The reason I wanted to go was because I’ve heard their stories growing up, and I feel like this country wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for their service,” said Shawna Ulrich, a senior.

“I want to pay my respects to the people who have died serving and protecting this country, and to see the president inaugurated, too,” she continued.  “I may not have another opportunity to attend that.”

Ulrich said the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama will once again mark him as the face of our country’s decisions.  He will have a dramatic effect on what the nation does for the next four years. Even at 18 years old, she understands the power of voting.

“I’ve begun to see how big of an effect a president can have on the country, and I see things the country is going through.  One day,our children will be affected by the choices we are making,” she added.

The class plans to take the inaugural trip from Jan. 19 to Jan. 22.
