Teens team up for Relay for Life

Raise $1,265 in first year

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A group of high school freshmen joined together to raise $1,265 for this year’s Laurel County Relay for Life campaign. Team Honey Badger consisted of nine South Laurel students who made “an enemy” of cancer and worked to support this worthy cause.

“They worked hard,” said Marti Harris, community representative for Relay. “And when you consider they can’t even drive. And thanks to their parents; they couldn’t do it without them. New faces help our event grow. To have a team of young people take up the cause like that is wonderful. They are the future leaders of events like this.”

The Honey Badger team captain is Hannah Gibbs who came up with the idea of getting a team together.

“Our Youth Leadership Council was doing a mini relay at school to try to raise money to support the big relay this year, so I wanted to have a booth for that,” Gibbs said. “I thought it would be more fun to do a big team and try to raise money for the big event, too.”

Gibbs asked all her friends at SLHS to be on her team.

The name Honey Badger comes from a YouTube video the teens saw.

“It’s pretty funny,” Gibbs said. “It’s supposed to be like nature’s most fearless animal, the honey badger, so we were cancer’s most fearless enemy.”

Team member Zachary Cassidy said he got involved because it was a good cause and he has a couple of grandparents who are survivors.

“Those extra few dollars might find a ground-breaking cure for cancer,” he said. “We had two bake sales, which were big fundraisers, and we did some fundraising at the actual event. We gave donation cans to our teachers and our parents so that they could ask for donations at work or at their school. We tried to have at least one of us walking all the time. We walked a lot of rounds. I couldn’t tell you how many.”

Gibbs plans on having a team in next year’s relay and Cassidy said he would be there.

Gibbs’ parents are proud of their daughter and her teammates.

“Her mom (Teresa) and I are treating the team to frozen yogurt at Daddy Yo’s on Saturday,” said her father, Roger Gibbs.
