A blue cab of a 2006 Volvo tractor trailer was reduced to a mangled mess of metal after it struck another tractor trailer in the rear, resulting in traffic backups in the southbound lane of I-75 on Monday evening.
The impact collision sent the blue tractor trailer driven by Ivan Babyak, 28, of Bensenville, Ind., into the guardrail just before London’s Exit 41, with debris littering the roadway and sending the right front fender of the blue truck into the emergency lane near the concrete barrier and a long strip of the tire lying atop the barrier.
According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, Post 11, Babyak struck a white 2005 Volvo tractor trailer driven by 35-year-old Michael Moreno of Miami, Fla. The accident caused the closing of the two right hand lanes of Interstate 75, causing traffic to back up for several miles.
While emergency workers worked to extinguish the smoke coming from under the hood of Babyak’s truck, Kentucky State Police directed traffic through the area although the cleanup from the crash took several hours.
The accident is being investigated by Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Rob Mitchell. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Sgt. Lafe Owens, Trooper Ryan Loudermilk, Trooper Jack Riley, Laurel County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore, other members of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Laurel County Emergency Management, the State ERT and Eco-Tech.
