Mother arrested for child endangerment

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Details on the specifics of how two young children were left alone on Wednesday night, but their mother now faces charges of abandonment of a minor and public intoxication of controlled substances.

Joyce A. Blanton, 35, of Cornett Subdivision Road in London, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 9 and remained at the Laurel Detention Center at press time Friday on a $10,000 cash bond.

Blanton’s arrest came after Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies received a call about two underage children who had been abandoned on Wednesday night.

Deputy Greg Turner, Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, and Deputy Robbie Grimes went to the residence in Cornett Subdivision, five miles south of London, around 9 p.m. after receiving the call. They began checking with neighbors and learned that the children, whose ages were not identified, were two homes away. The persons of that home said the children had been there since 3:45 p.m. and did not know the whereabouts of the children’s mother.

Deputies checked with the children’s grandmother, who said Blanton was allegedly out looking for the children. However, once she was located two residences away from her own home, Blanton’s version of where she had been was questionable and had conflicting statements, and deputies determined that she was under the influence of controlled substances.

Social Services was called to the scene and the children were released to the grandmother and Blanton was placed under arrest and taken to the Laurel County Detention Center.
