Ontario woman dies from crash

Black ice contributes to first fatality of year

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Torrents of rain followed by swiftly dropping temperatures and snowfall on Sunday night created hazardous driving conditions and resulted in the first traffic fatality of the new year.

The accident occurred near the 36 mile marker of Interstate 75, two miles south of London, in the southbound lane when a car slid into the path of a southbound tractor trailer. The Chrysler Intrepid reportedly hit a patch of black ice, spun out of control and into the tractor trailer. The accident took place around 1:50 a.m. Monday.

All three passengers in the car were seriously injured. Slavko Frkovic, 67, and the two passengers, 31-year-old Sanja Frkovic and 66-year-old Svetlana Frkovic, all of Ontario, Canada, were transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for their injuries. Svetlana Frkovic, the passenger in the back seat of the vehicle and the wife and mother of the other two passengers, later died as a result of her injuries.

The two passengers in the tractor trailer - driver Charles D. Brown, 62, of Frenchburg, Ky. and passenger Anthony Thomas, 57, of Saltlick, Ky., were not injured. Brown was driving a tractor trailer for Moran Foods which was loaded with grocery cargo.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Morris is investigating the accident. He was assisted at the scene by Deputy Mikey Ashurst, Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement Officer Rob Mitchell, Kentucky State Police Trooper Jason McCowan, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel County Volunteer Fire Department, and the London-Laurel Rescue Squad. The London City Police Department assisted with traffic control in shutting down the southbound lane of I-75 at Exit 38.

Numerous other accidents were reported throughout Sunday night and Monday morning.
