There were only two problems listed in the report which was done by Robert Abner.
“The first one is procedural,” Mayor Troy Rudder said. “What the federal government recommends is that we have two or three different CPAs in the office to present our financial report. The way it is now, they (Abner) do our financial report for us as they do the audit. We’re not going to do that (hire another CPA) because it’s not cost effective. The second problem is the segregation of duties. We try to do this. The person who writes the checks does not sign the checks. We try to segregate as well as we can. Counties are like that.”
“We’re doing quite well,” he continued. “We reduced our debt down to just one major debt (fire department and aerial truck) and in two or two and a half years we can get that one paid off.”
There was a first reading of a comprehensive ordinance establishing personnel policies and procedures and repealing Ordinance No. 967 and Ordinance No. 880 and establishing an ethics code for city employees and officials, and establishing a pay and classification plan with authorized positions with assigned grade and salary scale and repealing and replacing the existing compensation plan.
The City Council also discussed two properties they own on Jackson Street behind the London Community Center. The Azbill House will be bidout to have someone move it and the Sweeney House will be demolished this winter.
The members approved to increase the health insurance deductible from $500 to $1,500. Rudder said the increase was made so that the insurance premium would only increase 10 percent.
The London-Laurel County Rescue Squad received a grant for $37,000 from Homeland Security for a sonar camera to help find bodies in lakes. The council voted to bid out to three companies who make this kind of camera.
Councilman Judd Weaver asked the members to review the entertainment ordinance because he has had several customers at his restaurant, Weaver’s Hot Dogs, who want acoustic music to be played.
Other business acted on at the December 3 City Council meeting included reappointing Jim Robinette to the London-Corbin Airport Board and appointing Danny Phelps to the London Utility Commission Board.
The next City Council meeting is January 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the basement of City Hall.
