Man dies from single stab wound; Murder suspect turns self in

A Harlan man turned himself in to police following a stabbing incident that left a Lily man dead.

Hubert Dean Lewis, 25, of Harlan County, is now charged with the murder of 60-year-old Clinton Ray Howard of Campbell Road in Lily.

Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling joined Laurel Sheriff’s officials and members of Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County at a residence on Campbell Road, 11 miles south of London Thursday night where Bowling pronounced Howard dead at the scene. Bowling said Howard had died from a single stab wound to the neck and his body was sent to Frankfort for an autopsy after the investigation.

The incident stemmed from an argument between 36-year-old Tiffany Jackson of Corbin, Lewis, and Howard that took place around 6 p.m. at the Lily residence. Jackson reportedly called 911 to report that a man had been stabbed.

Laurel Sheriff’s Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, Deputy Daniel Grigsby, and Deputy Shane Rice responded to the call, where they found Howard dead from the stab wound. Lewis allegedly stabbed Howard during the argument, then left the scene before deputies arrived.

According to Laurel Sheriff’s Deputy and Public Affairs Officer Gilbert Acciardo, Lewis contacted the Laurel Sheriff’s Office on Friday and voiced his intent to turn himself in to authorities.

“He called us from his dad’s house in Benham,” Acciardo said. “That’s where  he (Lewis) is from. We called the Harlan Sheriff’s Office and they went out and picked him up.”

Acciardo said deputies from the Laurel office traveled to Harlan to bring Lewis back to Laurel County for questioning and inevitably, charge him with the murder of Howard.

Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Charlie Loomis, along with Detective Billy Madden and Detective Richard Dalrymple are continuing the investigation into the murder.

This is the second murder in the county in 2013. The first murder came on Aug. 29 when Ernest Chris Chumbley shot his terminally ill wife three times in the face, allegedly because his wife had asked her husband to end her suffering. Chumbley has been indicted on murder charges and faces more court hearings in 2014..
