LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Though no official cause has yet been determined, a short circuit in a garage door may have sparked a house fire on Carter Lane Saturday.
The plume of black smoke could be seen in the southern section outside the London city limits Saturday as firefighters responded to the scene.
Laurel County Volunteer Fire Department responded to the house fire near the southern end of Ky. 1006 around 11:22 a.m. According to Chief Tommy Johnston, the single story brick home suffered from some smoke damage, although most of the home was saved by the firefighters’ efforts.
The fire, according to Johnston, began in the garage area of the home and then spread to the interior.
“The man had just closed the garage door so the (wiring in the) door could have had a short circuit,” Johnston said. “The majority of the house was saved but there were a couple of rooms inside that had some smoke damage.”
The smoke also damaged the homeowner, whose name was not available, although Johnston said the man did not seek medical attention at the time of the incident.
Assisting at the scene were members of the London Fire Department, members of the Lily Volunteer Fire Department and Laurel EMS with Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County.
