Veterans Parade set for Nov. 3

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — In 2010, London made history by hosting the 19th "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans" event.

The turnout and response of that event inspired Laurel County Judge Executive David Westerfield to continue the veterans' parade each year. Last year's event was held on the Saturday prior to Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

This year, the event will be held in downtown London on Saturday, Nov. 3.

"The Veterans Parade is for every veteran of any war or conflict," Westerfield said. "We encourage everyone to come out and recognize our veterans."

The celebration will begin with a ceremony around the flag pole at the Laurel County Courthouse at 1 p.m., followed by a prayer, the pledge, and patriotic songs.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will feature some members of the Patriot Guard, some patriotic floats, and veterans either walking or riding during the parade.

Spectators are welcome to display posters in remembrance or in honor of their family veteran, listing the name, rank and branch of service.

After the parade, the veterans, their families and the public is invited to attend a luncheon at the American Legion Post 16 on Ky. 229 on Chris Hamblin Memorial Lane.

The luncheon will be hosted by various veteran-based organizations such as the American Legion Post 16 and Post 88, AmVets Posts 116 and 127, DAV, and VFW.

“We want everyone to come out and support our veterans and show our appreciation for their service to our country,” Westerfield said. “I don’t think we can ever do enough for them, because without them, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we have today.”

The public is encouraged to participate in the activities. Any groups wishing to participate should contact Westerfield’s office at (606) 864-4640.
