LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
A Tennessee man charged with hitting a man pulled off Interstate 75 to inspect his vehicle will have another preliminary hearing next month.
Austin T. Meredith, 24, was in Laurel District Court last week for a preliminary hearing on charges for causing the death of a Bagdad, Ky., man on July 7.
Meredith will await another hearing on Sept. 11, to allow a witness to be present. Meredith’s attorney, David Hoskins, requested a bond reduction for the Sevierville man, which was denied. He remains incarcerated in the Laurel County Detention Center under a $100,000 cash bond.
Meredith was traveling along I-75 near the 30-mile marker in a 2009 white Ford box truck when he crossed the fog line and struck 49-year-old Howard M. White. White was driving a 2000 Ford rollback wrecker truck and had pulled off the roadway into the emergency lane shoulder to check to see if his load was secure. The two passengers in the wrecker with White watched the accident occur, but were not injured by the impact of Meredith’s truck hitting the wrecker.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m., with emergency workers responding to the scene. Kentucky Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Sgt. Greg Reams said alcohol was a factor in the accident, and Meredith was charged with murder, DUI, wanton endangerment, and several commercial vehicle violations such as driving for too many hours and quality of services.
