Berea man missing after lake storm

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Multiple agencies launched a search for a man missing off his boat after helping others avoid a wind and rain storm on Laurel River Lake Thursday afternoon.

The search continued on Friday for 32-year-old Clarence Holmes of Berea after his pontoon boat was found near Marsh Branch on Laurel Lake around 9 p.m.

The unoccupied boat was banked near a small island near the boat ramp at Marsh Branch, approximately 13 miles south of London, following a storm that produced waves reaching between 7 and 8 feet tall. Holmes had reportedly been driving his pontoon around the lake trying to help people moor their houseboats prior to the storm.

Holmes was last seen around 3 p.m. His personal belongings were still aboard the pontoon boat.

A search for Holmes began soon afterwards and involved officers from the United State Forest Service, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Kentucky Conservation Service, Emergency Management of Laurel County, the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. The search was called off due to nightfall on Thursday and was scheduled to resume on Friday morning.

As of press time on Friday, no information concerning the ongoing search for Holmes was available.
