LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — As April quickly comes to a close and May rolls in, students at North Laurel High School’s FFA will begin what they call their biggest fundraiser of the year by opening the doors to their greenhouse and begin selling the “fruits” of their labor.
Students began selling a wide variety of hanging plants and flowers on April 19 as a way to help raise money for trips to regional competitions, scholarships and other important events for the green thumbed students.
“This is such a great program for our students,” said Dustin Estridge, an agriculture teacher at NLHS. “Not only do the kids get to grow things and learn to work with their hands, but we rotate them around so that they spend time in the greenhouse and time selling what they grow. They’re learning how to handle money and they learn customer service too.”
According to Estridge, every penny raised through greenhouse sales goes towards the students, funding things such as trips to regional and state competitions,. The money also goes towards scholarships.
“Agriculture and FFA give our students the skills to go out and be successful in this field,” Estridge said. “We’re really hoping we have a good year so that we can send our students to the state competition this year.”
This year, 16 students won or placed in regional competition and will be heading to state competition. Greenhouse sales can raise the money they need to get there.
Students will be selling flats for $11 and packs for $1. Flowers available are: wave petunias, impatiens, begonias, small marigolds, vinca vines, snap dragons, dianthus, moss roses and verbenas.
Potted plants cost $2.50 for a 4.5 inch pot. Choices include: asparagus fern, geraniums, lantana, non stop begonias, spikes, sweet potato vines and million bells.
They also have several choices of hanging baskets for $11 and extra large hanging baskets for $20. Additionally, students will be selling a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower for $10 per flat or $2 for six plants.
The NLHS greenhouse will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sales will end on May 17.
