Homeward bound?

5 corgis up for adoption because breeder’s new home is too small

Have you always wanted a pure bred dog but did not really want to pay big bucks for one? Then here’s your chance.

There are five corgis that are up for adoption at the Laurel County Animal Shelter. The owner was a breeder who moved into a subdivision and did not have room to care for them.

“We had to move and there wasn’t any place to care for them anymore,” said Blaine Inman, the owner. “I had three acres where I used to live and I had a kennel. I know the guys at the animal shelter and they take good care of the animals down there. I felt like they could find them a real good home.”

Four of the corgis are male and one is female. The female is red and white; one of the males is red, white, and black; one male is white and black, and two males are red and white. They range in age from 2 to 7 years old and some belong to the same litter.

Inman started breeding the dogs, which are small with short legs and fox-like faces, after his daughter received one.

“My daughter Dana had a Pomeranian and it got killed,” Inman recalled. “She saw a picture of a corgi somewhere and she wanted one so we bought her one. That was around 1995. We fell in love with them. They’re just a really good, intelligent dog. They get along good with children. They’re good natured. They’re cattle herding dogs. Not a lot of people around here are familiar with corgis. You don’t see a lot. Most of the puppies I sold went to Lexington and other towns north of here.”

These five dogs have had their shots and are available for adoption at the shelter for $100 each. The shelter is located off KY 229 on Chris Hamlin Memorial Lane and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information call 864-6319.

QUICK FACT:

• Corgis make good family dogs but will not tolerate inconsiderate treatment. If they nip at your heels they're only trying to herd you into a group. They make good apartment dogs if walked on a regular basis.
