Commission moves to update county zoning map

Since Building Inspector Doug Gilbert and the London-Laurel County Planning & Zoning Commission have been using an outdated zoning map, bids were advertised in The Sentinel-Echo last month to amend and update it.

After reviewing three bids at its Feb. 10 meeting, the commissioners accepted a bid from Laurel County Property Valuation Administrator Joyce Garland.

Garland’s bid was the lowest of Kriss Lowry & Associates of Corinth and Geographic Development Group of Owensboro.

The commissioners also reviewed four properties that were not in compliance with the new city ordinance regarding blighted and deteriorated properties. They determined they were all zoned properly and in compliance with the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

Some of the property owners did not understand why the zoning board was involved in the matter.

The zoning commission only determines if the use or reuse of the property is in keeping with the City’s Comprehensive Plan. It does not enforce the blighted and deteriorated ordinance.

All of the properties the commissioners reviewed were deemed in compliance during their meeting:

• Margret Feltner Reep property at 902 N. Main St., zoned C-2.

• Wayne Parrott property at 207 West 7th Street, zoned R-2.

• Paula S. Farley property at 210 Substation St., zoned C-2.

•Anderson Development Properties on Pearl Street, zoned C-2.

These properties will go to the city’s ‘Vacant’ Property Review Commission to see whether the they are blighted or deteriorated.

A zone change request was made by Visions LLC for property located at 305 Dyche Street. The request was to change the Hollis Hodges home from R-2 to C-2. A public meeting concerning the zoning change is scheduled for the beginning of the next zoning meeting March 10.

The commissioners also said all the requirements on the South Laurel Properties Subdivision plat, formerly known as Johnny Watkins Chrysler on South Laurel Road, had been met.

A flood statement, a check for a fire hydrant installation, a storm water drainage plan and a soil erosion control plan have all been completed.

Questions regarding zoning can be directed to Gilbert at 864-8401.
