Laurel Count residents will have the opportunity to show their PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) in their community in April at the Laurel Lake and Wood Creek Lake cleanups and have the opportunity to dispose of some of their own trash for free.
Laurel County Solid Waste Director Jim Ed McDaniel said through April 10, residents may dump their trash for free at the Laurel County Landfill in Lily.
“They just need to come by the solid waste office and pick up a pass,” McDaniel said.
Laurel County Solid Waste is located at 164 Substation Street, off McWhorter Street in London. The office is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Laurel Lake Cleanup, which is held at the spillway on April 18, pits Laurel against Whitley County to see which county can turn out the most volunteers, as a result take home the Cleanup Cup. Laurel County has taken home the cup the last seven years.
“Last year, more than 500 people turned out at the event with Laurel County bringing about 300,” said Ranger Amy Allen of the London District.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Laurel Dam Beach, Volunteers may elect to work from boats or along the shoreline and access roads. Allen said a prize will be given for the most unique item.
On April 25, volunteers are invited to help clean up around Wood Creek Lake. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will scour the lake and shoreline.
“Just show up at the boat dock,” McDaniel said when asked what the volunteers need to do.
The dock is located off Hawk Creek Road. From west KY 80, turn right onto Hawk Creek Road. Go past Ott’s grocery to Wood Creek Grocery and bear right at the fork in the road. The road ends at the dock.
