Kentucky State Police’s initial investigation into the death of an infant dropped by a 9-year-old has determined it was an accident and no criminal charges will be filed.
Kentucky State Police Trooper First Class Don Trosper, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, said a caller to 9-1-1 Thursday evening reported an unresponsive infant. Trooper Steve Smallwood went to the home on KY 552 in Keavy. Witnesses told Smallwood the 9-year-old was carrying the baby through the home, tripped and dropped the infant.
“They didn’t say why the child was carrying the infant,” Trosper said. “ The infant fell about 2 or 3 feet.”
The child was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Fayette County coroners notified police Sunday that the infant had died as a result of the injuries. The exact cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy. No criminal charges are expected at this time, Trosper said.
