At the request of U.S. Rep. Harold “Hal” Rogers, R-KY, the U.S. Department of Defense has allocated $20,000 to install oil heaters in the Kentucky National Guard maintenance shop in London.
Capt. John Barger, with the Kentucky National Guard, said the shop, which was built in the 1950s, provides maintenance and support for trucks and vehicles, not only for national guard vehicles throughout the region. While the facility has a traditional heating system, the oil heaters will be installed in the maintenance bay.
“If you have ever tried to heat a garage, it can get expensive,” Barger said. “This system will augment the existing heating system. It will save the taxpayers money by cutting the utility costs at the facility and giving the national guard a way to dispose of oil in an environmentally friendly manner.”
The oil burners will be fueled with used motor oil from the national guard vehicles.
Because of the amount of money, the project will have to be let for bid. No timetable has been given for the completion of the project.
According to officials at Rogers’ office, this is part of a nationwide effort by the Department of Defense to modernize military facilities and ensure they are in good working order.
“Maintaining our military facilities is vital to our homeland security,” Rogers said. “I am pleased that the field maintenance center in London will be receiving an upgrade in order to better maintain the facility. The Kentucky National Guard is a tremendous asset to our region and these upgrades will go a long way to improving their day to day operations.”
