Deputies arrest woman indicted for murder in April wreck

Less than a week after she was indicted on murder and other charges stemming from a fatal wreck on April 9, Miranda Knowles is in custody in the Laurel County Detention Center.

Knowles, 23, of London, was taken into custody at her home Tuesday night by Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Richard Dalrymple, the accident reconstructionist who was called to investigate the three-vehicle wreck on KY 192.

Knowles is being held in the detention center on a $200,000 cash bond.

On June 19, a Laurel County Grand Jury indicted Knowles on charges of murder, four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence of intoxicants and failure to maintain automobile insurance. When Knowles did not appear in court for the return of the indictments, an arrest warrant was issued.

According to Dalrymple, Knowles’ Mitsubishi crossed the centerline on KY 192 near the London Country Club, sideswiped a minivan and slid into the westbound lane, where it was T-boned by a Honda Accord and went into a ditch.

Knowles’ cousin Courtney Carter, and a 5-year-old boy were passengers in Knowles’ car. Knowles and the boy were airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Carter was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Four other people, including Knowles, were taken to Saint Joseph-London for treatment of their injuries.

Sheriff Fred Yaden said tests showed Knowles was legally drunk and had various drugs in her system. Dalrymple confirmed the alcohol was in excess of Kentucky’s .08 legal limit.

He said investigators were in the process of comparing the drugs found by the test with the drugs Knowles was given at the hospital to determine what she may have taken illicitly.

Knowles is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 24 in Laurel Circuit Court.
