Plea talks continue is sex abuse case
Less than a week before Christopher Spurlock was scheduled to go to trail on charges of sexual abuse and sodomy charges, Judge Roderick Messer agreed to attorneys’ requests to continue the trial.
Spurlock, 38, of London, appeared in Laurel Circuit Court Thursday for what was scheduled to be the the final pretrial hearing. However, after attorneys explained they were continuing negotiations in an effort to reach a plea agreement, Messer agreed to set aside Wednesday’s trial date. Messer typically sets the final pretrial hearing as the dead line for a plea agreement.
Messer set the case for trial on Dec. 1 with a final pretrial on Nov. 26.
Following an investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Stacey Anderkin, a Laurel County Grand Jury returned an indictment against Spurlock in March on charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse and distribution of obscene material to a minor.
According the indictment, in January, Spurlock allegedly forcably engaged in sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 12 and showed the child obscene photographs.
