A Laurel County boy is in critical condition at Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, with burns on half of his body.
Emergency personnel were called to a home on Campbell Road about 6:30 p.m. Sunday where 4-year-old Dustin Mederos had been burned while reportedly playing with a lighter.
According to the child’s family, Mederos’ mother, Sharon Freaky, was putting something on the stove when Mederos got ahold of her lighter and tried to burn a tag off of his clothes. His shirt caught fire, resulting in second- and third-degree burns.
Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and the Lily Fire Department responded to the scene. Mederos was initially airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He was taken Monday to Shriners Hospital, which specializes in treating burns.
