15-year-old boy hurt in ATV crash

A 15-year-old boy was struck by an SUV Friday evening while driving his ATV.

Sandra H. Walters, 58, was driving east on Helvetia Road, just past Cloyd Drive, when the boy pulled out in front of her. Walters slammed into him as the boy’s brother, who was also driving an ATV, watched.

The Sentinel-Echo does not release the name of minors.

Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Young said the boy was wearing a helmet. Walters was wearing her seat belt and was alone in her vehicle, a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo.

The boy was transported via helicopter to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.

He is believed to have a broken leg and may have been suffering from abdomen or chest injuries.

Walters, of East Bernstadt, came away un-scathed from the accident.

Young was assisted at the scene by Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and East Bernstadt Fire Department.
