LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Earl Howard Road in Keavy was a hub-bub of activity Wednesday afternoon as Laurel County Sheriff’s officials closed in on an illegal drug trafficking operation.
Leland Karr, 62, and his wife, 51-year-old Shirley M. Karr, are now lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center on various drug charges after police found more than 400 pills, including oxycodone and hydrocodone, and a large amount of cash in their residence, 12 miles south of London.
Both were charged with first-degree, second-degree and third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. While the charges against Shirley Karr are her first offenses in trafficking the prescription narcotics, Leland Karr has prior convictions, netting him with second offense charges on each. Leland Karr has a 1997 conviction in Laurel Circuit Court for trafficking illegal substances.
Law enforcement officials involved in the investigation, search and arrests of the Karrs included Sheriff John Root, Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore, Detective Jason Back, Detective Billy Madden, Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, Deputy Robbie Grimes, Deputy Greg Turner, Deputy Shawn Boroviak, Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, Bailiff Shane Rice, Bailiff Kenton Scharf, and agents from the London office of the Drug Enforcement Agency.
