Laurel County retains cleanup cup

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Laurel County remains champion in the number of volunteers participating in the annual Laurel Lake Cleanup.

Despite the cool, rainy weather, the turnout was respectable with 105 volunteers from Laurel, 65 from Whitley, and 50 from surrounding counties.

About 4,397 pounds of trash was removed from around the lake and the roads leading up to it.

It was Baldrock Volunteer Fire Department’s Joey McIntosh’s first time at the cleanup. “I use the lake so I thought I would help clean it up,” he said.

Tyler Anders, 16, has been volunteering for 11 years for the same reason.

Doug Creech, a volunteer Baldrock firefighter, said his department covers this area in emergency responses and so it would be fitting for him and his co-workers to help clean it up.

“We already adopted Ky. 192 and 1193 from Marsh Branch to the Spillway,” he said.

Andrew Siller, who recently moved here from Vermont, said he couldn’t believe how much trash we have.

“We picked up Styrofoam, plastic, tires, beer bottles and glass,” he said. “This is the second cleanup I’ve been to. The first one was at Cumberland Falls. I’ve never seen such a big, organized, community effort like this.”

The “Catch of the Day” was won by Maggie Howard, who found a pink elephant soap dish.

Braeden Lickiter turned 11 years old last Thursday. When his father asked him what he wanted special to do on Saturday, he said he wanted to go to the Laurel Lake Cleanup.

This year marks the 10th successive year Laurel County has won the title for the most volunteers. The cleanup was started in 2000 and was won by Whitley County the first two years.
