LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — To date, the Laurel County Relay For Life has raised more than $31,000.  With six weeks left to go, event chairwoman Nikki Sizemore hopes they will reach their $75,000 goal.

The annual event was held on June 14 at the Laurel-London Optimist Club.  Teams continue to hold fundraisers throughout the summer to collect money for the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society supports cancer patient services, research, advocacy and programs across the country in hopes to one day eradicate cancer entirely.

“The total amount of money raised is growing every day,” Sizemore said.  “They have until August 15 to raise money.”

To date, the top teams and current totals raised are:

• Saint Joseph London, $6,000

• Light One Candle, $3,600

• Team Honey Badger, $1,926

• SCC Med. Asst., $1,768

• Walmart No. 1113, $1,316

Sizemore said teams are working hard to reach their overall goal and have a few other fundraisers planned.  There will be two 5K events later in the month.  One will be on July 13, and the other on July 27.  Both fundraisers will take place at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

An award ceremony will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 24, at the Jackson Energy Building.  The top fundraising team will receive an award and a trophy.   Other awards include the “Jammin in Their Jammies” award, the “Relayaholic” award and “The Little Engine that Could” award will be given out.

At the award ceremony, Sizemore plans to announce the date of the 2014 Relay For Life event.

Sizemore said she also plans to kick off the 2014 Relay For Life fundraiser season in September.
