LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A Corbin woman faces five felony counts of assault, stemming from a two-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon.

Ruth A. Marcum, 39, of Verbena Drive in Corbin, was driving her GMC Sierra pickup westbound on Ky. 770 in southern Laurel County around 5 p.m. on July 4 when she reportedly lost control and went into the eastbound lane. The pickup crashed head-on into a Chrysler 300, sending both vehicles to a stop in the eastbound lane.

Marcum was treated at Saint Joseph London and released. She was then charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs and prescription of a controlled substance not in its proper container.

However, her charges were upgraded on Friday to include five counts of first-degree assault, since the five passengers in the Chrysler all received serious injuries from the crash.

Those included the driver, 63-year-old Danny E. Barnett of Corbin, and passengers 64-year-old Marsha Barnett, 40-year-old Becky Barnett, 44-year-old Jeffery Barnett, and a 12-year-old male, all of Corbin. All five sustained serious injuries in the crash and were admitted to Baptist Health Corbin. The 12-year-old was later transferred to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington.

Marcum is being held in the Laurel County Detention Center.

The crash was investigated by Deputy Robbie Grimes, who was assisted by Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter and Lt. Chuck Johnson.
