LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
An outside cluster of fitness equipment is now open to the public at the Laurel County Health Department, in conjunction with the existing walking track. The final addition to the department’s building plans was completed on Tuesday by Laurel County Detention Center’s inmates on work release.
The outdoor fitness equipment from Columbia Cascade is valued at $6,000, and Laurel County Public Health Director Mark Hensley noted 10 work release inmates saved the health department about $6,500 in labor costs. There is only one other fitness area like this in the state, located in Elizabethtown. Surrounding public health departments will soon visit Laurel County in order to see how beneficial the fitness area is the community, according to John Lester, certified park and recreation professional who assisted in the installation of the equipment.
Hensley said he encourages his staff to engage in physical activity, and the newest addition to the property will be a strong asset. Many staff members at the department are already currently utilizing the walking track on a daily basis. The fitness cluster can be used for sit-ups, chin-ups, pull-ups and body tucks.
“You can do everything at your own leisure, anything from beginners to experts,” Lester said.
In addition to providing a place for exercise, a bench is offered for rest as well as enjoying the outdoors. The Laurel County Health Department promotes not only a healthy lifestyle for all citizens, but a healthy future in all areas of public health for the county.
