Shooting at Gilliam Law Office

Attorney dies from single gunshot wound to the chest Friday afternoon

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A London attorney died Friday afternoon from a single gunshot wound, although authorities would not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death.

Larry W. Gilliam, 59, of Nancy, was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. at Saint Joseph-London by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling. Gilliam was transported to the St. Joseph-London hospital after a shooting at his office at 129 East Fourth Street.

Bowling said Gilliam died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

According to London City Police Chief Stewart Walker, Laurel County 9-1-1 dispatch received a call at 2:56 p.m. from Gilliam’s wife Lisa, who was the only other person in the office.

“Any time I have had any dealings with Larry, he was always professional and upbeat,” Walker said.

Late Friday afternoon, Gilliam’s wife was still being questioned, but she was not being held. Walker said he could not comment on any suspects or about the weapon. Police have obtained a search warrant to go back into Gilliam’s office.

Traffic was blocked from entering the 100 block of Fourth Street as law enforcement officials swarmed the area in attempts to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.

According to records in Laurel Circuit Court, Gilliam was a native of Harlan County and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1991. He was a former mine inspector with the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals before becoming a lawyer.

Gilliam received his law degree from the Florida Coastal School of Law. He was admitted to the Florida and Kentucky Bar Associations in 2002.
