More jobs are coming to London, adding another economic boost to the community.

Less than two weeks ago, more than 1,000 jobs opened up in the area, as General Dynamics announced their purchase of the former Micro Devices building on Ky. 1006 for a call center.

Serco, an information technology company based in Reston, Va., has announced their intentions to locate in London. Serco provides services to federal, state and local government agencies and would employ 638 persons in London.

Serco will reportedly locate in the former Image Entry building in the Laurel County Industrial Park No. 4, off West Ky. 80 in the Vaughn Ridge business park. They will open on October 1.

Charles Pennington, executive director for the London-Laurel County Industrial Development Authority, is excited about the latest job opportunities for Laurel Countians.

“We are so honored and pleased to welcome Serco to our family of industries in Laurel County,” he said. “Our location, work force and infrastructure contributed to the selection of Laurel County for the new project.”

The new facility will offer a call center to assist persons with the new Affordable Care Act provisions which go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

Pennington said the wages offered by Serco will be “competitive” with similar jobs in that field and all jobs will be full-time positions. Serco will be a processing/scanning facility and is hiring for mailroom supervisor, training specialist/journeyman, business analyst, linguist/analyst, and mail clerk. Serco will offer qualified medical/dental/vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, and professional growth opportunities in a safe, drug-free environment.

Persons interested in applying can do so online at Job fairs will be announced at a later date.

Pennington said the company contacted the Industrial Development Authority several months ago about their intent to locate in London, but the details of a location had to be worked out with both the owner of the building and Serco management. The building had been vacant for several years.

General Dynamics is set to open on Sept. 1. General Dynamics is currently taking applications online as well as hosting the last of two job fairs at Somerset Community College’s Laurel campus this Saturday, July 27. Persons interested in those jobs can either attend the job fair, although officials said the online applications is the preferred method to apply. Online applications can be completed by visiting their website at

For members of the Industrial Development Authority, the location of two businesses will bring an excess of 1,600 new jobs to the area — a definite boost in Laurel County’s economy.

“The unemployment rate has risen over the past several months, and this should be a big help in that,” said Paula Thompson, executive assistant for the Industrial Authority. “We’re hoping the people who want a job will apply for these positions. These are good paying jobs with benefits and it will be a great addition to the community.”
