LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The Summer Feeding Program for any child under 18, regardless of income, began this week at several locations in Laurel County.
The program is federally funded and is administered locally by the United Way of Laurel County.
The sites where the food is distributed are Mill Street Park, Plantation Apartments, and churches including Harvest Time Pentecostal, Corinth Baptist, Community Christian, Eastside Church of God, Hawk Creek Baptist, St. William Catholic, Bethel Holiness, Colony Holiness, Slate Ridge Bible, New Salem Baptist, Calvary Worship Center, New Harvest Baptist, Souls’ Harbor, Solid Rock Baptist, Hightop Baptist, Liberty Baptist, and East Bernstadt Church of God.
On Wednesday, 100 lunches were delivered to one route, which included Mill Street Park where 20 children were fed.
The lunch at the park included a baloney sandwich, chips, an orange, a small bag of carrots, and milk.
Jennifer Woods, her four children, and two of their friends took advantage of the free food.
“I didn’t know about it,” Woods said. “We’re from Williamsburg. I brought my children and two of their friends to the park to play. The food is very much appreciated. It’s a wonderful program.”
Donna Bolster brought her two children to the Mill Street Park site.
“I bring them to play and it’s (food) just a bonus. It’s a healthy program.”
Ashley Heeg of London said it was a good opportunity for her children to play and have a good lunch. They come twice a year during the summer.
Some of the food is delivered in a colorful aqua van that looks like a 60s Love Van. It’s called the Mystery Machine and is similar to the one in the cartoon Scooby-Doo. The van is sponsored by Kentucky Auto Exchange.
“The children love to see it coming,” said Judy Nicholson, director of the United Way of Laurel County.
