LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
Hazel Green Elementary is making an effort to keep student’s heads in the books this summer with open library hours and the implementation of a new Kindergarten Camp. The school’s library will now be open on Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon, while K-Camp continues in its second week.
“Basically, it gives our kids a head start,” said Hazel Green Principal Brad Mullins.
Mullins is hoping the transition from summer break to back-to-school will be easier with the extra assistance and availability of reading materials.
“We don’t want them losing the progress we made last year,” he said.
Additionally, approximately 30 kindergarteners signed up for K-Camp. For the young students and their parents, it’s a huge transition, Mullins said, learning school routines and interacting with other children.
“You can automatically tell the kids that have been to preschool because they know the routines — (rules for) walking in the hallway, sitting in your seat, little things like that,” he said.
During the camp Thursday, Teacher Patty Byers helped students differentiate between letters of alphabet and numbers, while her daughter, Rachel Byers, and Special Education Teacher Ashley Collett assisted them in identifying shapes and colors. The students were fully engaged in the learning activities.
When school begins, kindergarteners are issued a mandatory reading test to determine their reading level. The more comfortable the children are with reading helps not only the students in the long-run but teachers as they teach the entire class congruently.
The camp is held from 9 a.m. to noon daily and will run until Friday. Students can still sign up to attend.
“The district has been really supportive of this (camp),” Mullins said.
