LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Red, White & Bluegrass will be the theme for the July 4, Thursday Night Live celebration, sponsored by Cumberland Valley National Bank in downtown London.

The event will feature a bluegrass musical performance from the Flint Ridge Millers starting at 7 p.m.  The Flint Ridge Millers are known for their traditional bluegrass sound and for songs like “Handsome Molly” and “Cumberland Gap.”

In addition to the music, spectators will have the chance to make history as an attempt will be made to break the world record for the most people eating a honey bun at one time in one place.  The honey buns will be delivered fresh from Flowers Bakery.

The honey bun was created in 1954 at Griffin Pie Company in North Carolina.  Eventually Griffin Pie consolidated and located all production to London.  Now known as Flowers Bakery, an average of 10 million honey buns are produced at the facility each week.

“London Downtown is most excited to partner with Flowers Bakery to offer this unique activity,” said Chris Robinson of London Downtown.  “It’s important to remember this isn’t people eating the most honey buns, it is the most people eating a single honey bun.  We hope the community rallies behind this and enjoys the opportunity.”

The goal for the record is 550 people eating a honey bun at the same time at the same place.

Anyone can participate in the attempt to break the honey bun record.  Participants will be provided a honey bun.

“This will take place during the intermission of TNL,” Robinson said.  “So, we estimate around 8:30 p.m., but participants should come early to get registered.”
