LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Laurel County students could have to make up 13 of its 18 snow days if House Bill 487 passes and if no more school is missed.
As per the proposed bill, Education Commissioner Terry Holliday can forgive up to 10 instructional days in districts that have missed 20 or more days due to illness, inclement weather, weather-related emergencies or local disasters.
Because Laurel County schools have missed less than 20 days, the mandate would not apply. However, five of the 18 days missed could be forgiven. Each day, Laurel County students attend school 15 extra minutes to build up five days’ worth of bank time. If school board members approve, that time can be used toward forgiving days missed due to inclement weather.
The bill, which was co-sponsored by state Rep. Marie Rader, R-McKee, was introduced in the House Feb. 23 and to the House education committee the following day.
