LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A 10-day search for a man wanted for manufacturing meth ended Thursday morning when he turned himself in to police.

James Barlow, 28, of Gross Road in London, was arrested by Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Jason Back around 10:30 a.m.  He was charged with a warrant for manufacturing methamphetamine, first offense; first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; fourth-degree controlled substance endangerment to a child; possession of drug paraphernalia, cultivating marijuana, five or more plants, first offense; and first-degree fleeing or evading police on foot.

Barlow was arraigned in Laurel District Court on Friday morning and placed under a $10,000 cash bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 16.

The hunt for Barlow began on April 2 when Sheriff’s deputies accompanied representatives from the Cabinet for Families and Children (social services department) to a residence on Gross Road, off of Sinking Creek Road, eight miles west of London. The social workers were investigating a complaint and, when deputies arrived, Barlow ran out the back door of the residence.

Although deputies did not find Barlow, they did find a one-step meth lab in close proximity of where a child was playing. They also found three buckets inside the residence with marijuana sprouts growing, a meth pipe, and more marijuana plants growing in a flower garden outside the home.

Janice Middleton was also arrested at the scene.

Barlow became the target of a manhunt, with citizens in the area calling in tips on his whereabouts. Sheriff’s officials came close to an arrest on Tuesday morning when they went back to Barlow’s grandmother’s residence on Gross Road, but Barlow once again fled the scene on foot. However, four people in the home at the time were arrested for hindering prosecution or apprehension.

They were Barlow’s grandmother, 67-year-old Gloria Engle, and 26-year-old Angela Gross, both of Gross Road in London; 33-year-old Daniel Belcher of Grays Cemetery Road in Gray, and 26-year-old Amon K. Barlow, also of Gross Road in London. All now face pretrial hearings on June 4 and are each under a $2,500 surety bond.
