E.B. school lays off seven

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The East Bernstadt Independent School Board recently gave pink slips to seven of its employees — one special education teacher, two classroom teachers, one guidance counselor, and three instructional assistants.

“We have had a decrease of money in the budget,” Superintendent Vicki Jones said. “We have given pink slips. If the enrollment goes back up or their are changes in the budget, after we return the first of the year, we can bring them back. I really, really hate to be cutting. If we can’t sustain our budget then the state can come in and take over. We want to remain independent so we have to watch our budget really closely.” 

Since the students missed one more day because of snow, the new last day of school will be May 28, after Memorial Day.

The new elementary building is on schedule and the move will start taking place as soon as the students go home for the summer.

“That will allow us to begin our next phase,” Jones said. “They will take down the primary building that exists currently and put up an administration building. Along side that they will be renovating the gym at the same time.”

Other business acted on during the April 11 board meeting included:

• Approved a dental plan for employees through Mike Senters, who provides the cafeteria benefits.

“The employees will be paying a little more than they were but not much,” Jones said.

• Approved a second reading of a new policy for physical restraint and seclusion.

• Approved to apply for a grant from the Steele Reese Foundation for helping to fund textbooks. Jones said the state does not pay for textbooks.

• Approved an agreement with Laurel County Schools to provide substitute school bus drivers for after school activities. E.B. does not have substitute drivers, but it is advertising for some, Jones said.

• Approved to continue a nurse contract with the Laurel County Health Department.

• Approved an offer of assistance from School Facilities Construction Commission for technology assistance in the amount of $2,316 to be matched by the school’s general fund.

• Announced that Debbie Oliver, a pre-school assistant, will retire at the end of the school year.
