Social worker hides in bathroom after threatened

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The arrival of Laurel County Sheriff’s officials could well have been the key that saved a social worker from harm during an incident on Tom Cat Trail on Wednesday afternoon.

The press release from the Sheriff’s Office states that the social worker was conducting an investigation with a family on Tom Cat Trail, six miles east of London, around 2 p.m. when the man involved became extremely angry.

James R. Johnson, 20, of West Carter Road Apartments, reportedly left the home and ran across the street to a neighbor’s house to confront the neighbor he believed had reported the family to Social Services, and threatened the other man.

The neighbor got a gun and told Johnson to leave. However, the enraged Johnson instead struck the neighbor, took his Ruger Blackhawk pistol away from him, and threatened to kill him.

Johnson then went back to his home across the street, taking the pistol with him. The social worker had locked herself in the bathroom of the residence during the altercation, but Johnson allegedly came back inside his home and pointed the loaded and cocked pistol in the direction where the social worker was hiding.

Johnson was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery for taking the gun from the neighbor, second-degree wanton endangerment for pointing the loaded and cocked gun in the direction of the social worker, and fourth-degree assault against the neighbor man.

He is held in the Laurel Detention Center under $25,000 cash bond and scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Laurel District Court on Friday (today).
