LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The Red Cross understands that recovery from a disaster is a marathon, not a sprint, and it takes years to re-build. As families recover and rebuild from the March 2012 tornado, Coy Prichard of the American Red Cross Southeastern Kentucky division, said financial assistance is still available.
The National Red Cross is currently making aid available to families who are still in the phases of re-constructing their homes. More than 200 homes were damaged in East Bernstadt, and 64 homes completely demolished. Many who were hard hit are still replacing rooftops, installing windows and living in re-built homes with incomplete construction while trying to make ends meet.
So far, two families this year have come forward for additional aid, Prichard said.
If a family needs assistance for building supplies or construction to make their home complete, they may qualify for Red Cross assistance. The family must provide:
• The FEMA case number;
• Amount of assistance received from FEMA;
• Amount of assistance received from other agencies;
• Receipts showing how the assistance was spent; and
• Three quotes for needed supplies for construction.
Please bring all paperwork to the Red Cross office at 107 W. 5th St. in London. The request will be forwarded to the state Red Cross office in Louisville for approval.
For more information, call the Red Cross at 606 878-6333.
