Referee to be arrested

Photocopied paycheck to be paid twice

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A South Laurel Middle School softball referee recently received double payment for a game.

On May 2, the London Police Department received a complaint from South Laurel Middle School in reference to a check that had been written for services provided to the school’s athletic department.

The complainant advised investigating officers, Levi Bowling, 29, of Oneida, Ky., was paid by check for refereeing a ballgame at the school. When the school received a statement from the bank, they discovered two checks with the same check number had been passed through the banking system.

One of the checks had been cashed, while the second check had been deposited into a checking account. Through further investigation, officers discovered Bowling is believed to have made a copy of the original check, to have cashed the original check, and then deposited the copied one into his checking account.

Further Investigation revealed Bowling had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to appear on a prior charge of second-degree criminal possession of a forged Instrument from Clay County. London Police investigators learned Bowling would be refereeing a ballgame in Jackson County in the evening of May 2. They then contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and requested they attempt to make contact with the suspect and serve the outstanding warrant of arrest from Clay County.

London Police Officer Eric Stallard will be obtaining a warrant of arrest for Bowing in Laurel County on the charge of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

 Officer Stallard continues the investigation.
