LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
The London-Corbin Airport will have a different look soon, after nearly $1 millions in grants from the state will fix and upgrade some existing areas.
According to Larry Corum, airport manager, the facility located off South Laurel Road will soon apply grant monies to fix cracks in the runway
“We identified this a couple of times but we didn’t have the money to fix it,” Corum said. “But the state of Kentucky looked at it and identified 14 miles of cracks. They measured the length of the cracks and awarded us money to fix them.”
Corum said those cracks needed repair in order to keep water from getting between the pavement, causing the runway to break up. Once those cracks are repaired, the runway will also be re-marked and the area where the airplanes are tied down will also see new paint and repair.
The runway itself will also be re-sealed with new paint identifying the centerline and areas needed by pilots who are taking off or landing from the London facility.
“We’re tickled to death,” Corum added. “We have one of the busiest airports in the state and we’re glad the state of Kentucky is giving us this money.”
Corum said the grant money the airport is receiving will be about $1 million by the time all repairs and upgrades are completed.
In fact, the airport board is holding a pre-bid meeting on May 15 so interested contractors can learn more about the specifications for the bidding process. The bid has already run in newspapers last week, with sealed bids being opened on May 25.
“We will open the bids then and the lowest bidder will get the contract. The pre-bid meeting is to let the specifications for the project,” he added.
