Mother arrested when child wanders off

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The “what could have happened” to a three-year-old child wandering along the Keavy roadways on Easter morning are questions law enforcement officials faced while arresting the child’s mother.

Lillian Jordan, 20, of Paris Karr Road in Keavy, was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor after Laurel County Sheriff’s officials responded to a complaint of a toddler walking along Rooks Branch Road, 11 miles south of London, just before 11 a.m.

The child, who said her name was Kaylee, was not familiar to the three private citizens who were caring for her until law enforcement arrived, although one of the persons said the child had been seen earlier that morning walking down West City Dam Road before turning onto Rooks Branch Road toward Ky. 312. The citizens who took the child off the roadway attempted to find the child’s mother but had to seek police help in order to do so.

Deputy John Inman was successful in locating Jordan with the help of residents in the area who knew the child. Jordan came to the Bait Bucket store on Ky. 312 where the child had been taken.

Deputy William Bo Harris spoke with Jordan, who was reportedly asleep when the child left the home and apparently wandered off. However, since the mother had not contacted the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center to help locate the child, officers notified the Cabinet for Families and Children’s social services department, who arrived at the scene and placed the child in the care of her grandmother.

Jordan was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center following her arrest. Jail records indicate Jordan was released at 10:44 p.m. that same night under a $1,000 cash bond. She was scheduled for a hearing in Laurel District Court on Monday.
