Takes Talent: 250 gifted students gather for fun, educational opportunities

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Stark-white Ancient Egyptian funeral masks were caked onto their faces, as they kept their mouths covered and eyes closed. Next door, dreamcatchers were strung together with twine at London Elementary.  Laurel County's Gifted and Talented (GT) students gathered for camp this week and a chance to make learning fun.

Camp is a little different from regular classroom studies.

"You're allowed to talk during class so you can relate to other people," said Brianna Bowling, GT student.

Throughout the district, students are chosen according to their spring achievement test scores to be GT.  The annual GT summer event is funded through the Laurel County Board of Education, an investment worth the time and money in the midst of state budget cuts, said Barbara Meding, elementary resource teacher for the district's GT program.

"We're letting each of the children have hands-on experience in their identified areas as a GT student," she said.

Areas of interest include math, science, artistic creativity, drama and music.  Students let their talents flow and creativity show as they collaborated with each other.  Students are generally on the academic same level as each other making for progressive assignment achievement.

"It's just a great time to bring all the gifted students in the county together to be working with alike students and having a wonderful time," Meding said.

Classes this summer included bridge building, a rendition of the game show "Minute to Win it," Ancient Egypt, and Spanish basket weaving, among many others.  In the basket weaving class, students listened to authentic Spanish-inspired music and were encouraged to speak the language.

"They get a taste of what it is to be artisans," said Sherry Osborne, instructor of the class.

There are 250 GT students who participated in the camp.
