Veterans celebration approved

County, city split meal costs

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The patriotic spirit of community leaders shone through with the approval for a veterans celebration in November.

Laurel County Judge Executive David Westerfield approached the subject during the regular monthly meeting of the Laurel County Fiscal Court on Thursday morning, with magistrates agreeing to split the costs of a meal for veterans with the City of London.

“I think this is important that we honor our veterans,” Westerfield said.

The Veterans Parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Kmart parking lot. Afterwards, the veterans will enjoy a meal at the Matt Gentry American Legion Post on Ky. 229, off the Ky. 192 Bypass.

Magistrates also authorized Westerfield to sign an agreement with the state for $117,400 to be bid out for construction of culverts near bridges that are being repaired and replaced in the county.

Three new jail employees are also approved to be hired on a full-time basis at $9.50 per hour. Laurel Jailer Jamie Mosley’s wife, Christy Mosley, was approved to be paid $11 per hour.

After the measure had been voted on, District 6 Magistrate Noah Baker questioned why the fiscal court had to approve hiring and pay rates for jail employees, since the jail operates from another budget and the Jailer has jurisdiction over who to hire and set their pay rates.

Deputy Judge Executive Rick Brewer responded, stating that the measure was an action done by the fiscal court since jail employees are considered as county employees.

“You can approve or question the hiring of certain persons or an individual salary,” Brewer said.

In other actions, magistrates:

• Approved the sole bid for a CX 110 McCormick tractor at $47,700 from Southeast Farm Supply, which submitted the solitary bid

• Approved purchasing a boom mower under a state contract from Whayne Supply for $24,159.90

• Accepted the state auditor’s findings for the cost of remodeling and renovations on the third floor of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office building which was once shared by the county and the school board. Westerfield said the county would not seek any reimbursement from the school board.

• Approved a 400-foot extension to May Lane

• Appointed District 3 Magistrate Teddy Benge and District 4 Magistrate Jeff Book to a committee to review Phenette Lane and Marcum Trail.
