Council votes to replace four bridges

The London City Council voted Monday to replace four treacherous bridges — three leading to Mill Street and one off South Main Street.

The bridges are on Nevada Street next to Sonic Drive-In on South Main Street and near Mill Street on Second, Third and Fourth streets.

“On Nevada Street we’re going to take that culvert out,” Streets and Sanitation Director Steve Edge said. “The little bridges on second, third and fourth streets we’re going to take those out. We’re going to make them wider, where we can, so that large trucks can get across. We’ve got to get around some of the utilities.”

The bridges will be funded through a $250,000 federal Storm Water Grant the city received last year.

Facing eight cases to review from the Vacant Property Board, a motion was made by council Member Sharon Benge to discuss three at each regular meeting starting in March.

“If we do three at the next meeting, then they see that in the paper, that might prompt somebody to do what they need to do before they have to come,” Benge said.

Council members agreed to start reviewing properties at their next meeting and commended the Vacant Property Board on the fine job they are doing.

Attorney Larry Bryson asked City Building Inspector Doug Gilbert to provide pictures and copies of the letters sent to each homeowner so the council could review them before the next meeting. Several council members also said they would to visit the houses and trailers themselves.

The council also voted to renew Sheila Whittenback’s position as a commissioner on the Vacant Property Board for four years. Her term expires March 3.
