LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — The 78th Pittsburg Homecoming, set for this Friday and Saturday, will feature more entertainment than usual.

On Friday, there will be entertainment from 6 to 7 p.m., the children’s pageant from 7 to 8:30, entertainment from 8:30 to 9 p.m., the pageant crowning from 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and entertainment from 9:30 until 11 p.m.

On Saturday, registration for the older girl’s pageant will close at 5:30 p.m., the pageant will be from 6 to 8 p.m., an auction from 8 to 8:30 p.m., entertainment from 8:30 to 9 p.m., an auction from 9 to 9:30 p.m., entertainment from 9:30 to 10:15 p.m., and the pageant crowning at 10:15.

“Some of the pageant girls sing and we have Earl Gilbert as Elvis, and different local singers, and a comedy act, and a local comedian,” said Wanda Philpot, activities director.

There will be two concession stands.

Money raised from the pageants, auction, and concession stands will go toward the upkeep of the Pittsburg Cemetery and the shelter house area.

The homecoming was started in 1935 and was held on a square-dance floor. Then, when the Pittsburg School was built, it was held there. A wooden shelter was built in 1963 at its present location and, about 12 years ago, a metal building was erected. Elizabeth McNeil donated the land for the shelter in the early 1960s.

“We’re going to try to revitalize the homecoming for next year,” Philpot said. “To have the pageants on Thursday and Friday nights, then have a big homecoming more like it used to be. Used to, you couldn’t find a parking place. We want people to come out and have an enjoyable experience.”

The board members are Don Jeffrey, chairman; Ed Woody, treasurer; and Willard Jeffrey, Dennis Rush, Paul Carson, and Eddie Woody. Wilma Cloyd is the secretary.
