LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —
As the family of 32-year-old Clarence Holmes continues their vigil from their houseboat at Holly Bay Marina, rescue workers are expanding their search to other areas of Laurel Lake.
Holmes was last seen on his pontoon between Marsh Branch and Holly Bay when he assisted boaters in securing their watercraft before an approaching storm. His unoccupied boat was found idling and banked on an island between the two docks after the storm hit. Despite efforts of various rescue organizations across the state, Holmes has not been located.
However, Larry Vanhook, chief of the London-Laurel Rescue Squad, said some information recently disclosed has brought more questions regarding Holmes’ disappearance.
“Someone said their preacher was on the lake the day the storm hit and that he saw (Holmes’) boat on the island before the storm. If that’s the case, it could change the whole rescue. We’ve been looking between Marsh Branch and Holly Bay. His boat was banked on the island between there. But if he was there before the storm hit, that could change the whole search process.”
Vanhook added that he would like to speak to anyone who was on the lake that Thursday afternoon who might have seen Holmes’ boat near the island prior to the storm.
“With the information we have, we’ve done everything we know to do,” Vanhook said. “That’s why, when I heard about someone seeing the boat on the island prior to the storm, we’re expanding our search a little more.”
Vanhook said a teams from Grayson County and Bowling Green are scheduled to aid in the search this week.
Vanhook added other agencies that have already volunteered their crews and equipment have offered to return as the local rescue squad extends their search to other areas of the lake.
“We just keep searching, and it’s a long drawn out process,” Vanhook said. “It’s hard to do much on the weekends because of the boat traffic on the lake. But we keep looking and searching and hoping.”
