Children found alone at post office

Couple arrested for endangerment

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — A London couple was arrested Wednesday morning on charges of endangering the welfare of a minor after two children were found unattended at the London Post Office.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., London-Laurel County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received a call from employees at the U.S. Post Office, reporting that two young children had been found wandering around the parking lot unsupervised.

Officer Bryon Lawson with the London Police Department responded to the scene and spoke with postal employees, Julie Runion and Daniel Benge, who found the 2-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl.

Approximately 30 minutes from the time of the initial call, the mother of the children called the London-Laurel County 9-1-1 Dispatch Center to report her children were missing.

During the investigation Lawson was able to determine the children, who live behind the post office, had been missing for more than an hour and a half before the children were reported missing.

Amber Lorman, 26, and Shawn Smith, 21, both of Reams Lane, were arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

The children were unharmed and were placed in the custody of a family member by Child Protective Services.
